Daily TWiP - The Smurfs make their comic book debut today in 1958
Welcome to the Daily TWiP, your daily dose of all the holidays, historical observances, etc., we couldn't cram into The Week in Preview.

Today in 1958, a group of small blue creatures smurfed their way into the hearts of millions when they first appeared in a Johan and Peewit story in the Belgian comics magazine Spirou. Known as the Smurfs, these fantastic little beings were the creation of Belgian comics artist Pierre Culliford, who worked under the pen name Peyo.

The Smurfs were originally conceived as supporting characters in Peyo's Middle Ages fantasy series, "Johan and Peewit." The Smurfs lived in a handful of mushroom-like houses in a barren, hard-to-reach land, and were helpful resources for Johan and Peewit on their adventures - especially Papa Smurf, who was skilled with magic.

Comic readers were so captivated by them, however, that the Smurfs not only continued to share adventures with Johan and Peewit but were given their own comic series in 1959.
