Blue Cavern

I finally completed (well, almost) my miniature diorama which I've been planning to build for ages. Here are a few pics for starters, I'll post more on my pages eventually.

Now I have my head full of new ideas for the next projects. Hope I'll find the time (and nerve) to get started on the next one soon. It was good fun making it - Smurfs so are perfect for this kind of displays.

I love it Pauli, it is just soooooooo smurfy.

The idea is very simple yet it looks absolutely perfect for some great smurfy scenes. I will be looking forward to seeing what you come up with as I know you always have such nice ideas.

That's a nice setup (even if I'm 4 months late....). How did you make the terrain? With plaster and glue-on grass?

Its made out of fine-grained styrofoam . There are 3x 2.5cm layers glued together, rougly shaped with the large kitchen knife and finished off with a scalpel. The terrain was then painted with acrylic paints to hide the white surface, after which grass was glued on.

Hi thanks for the explanation. The technique strikes me as very clever, considering how inexpensive styrofoam can be and how expensive/fine your finished product looks.

Yes, its the stuff they use for the railway displays. I used a paintbrush to spread a fair bit of glue, added loads of grass and tapped it tight. After the glue had dried I removed all the loose grass.

The water is semi-transparent glass finish and actually not very good for the purpose. Clear resin would have been much better. The bottom of the creek is a layer of coarse sand I bought from an aquarium store . (As a hint for people making displays: you can get many different types of sand and stones from pet shops which sell aquariums. And usually for really cheap too)
