Slightly more serious topics for smurf collectors including promo smurfs, smurfy discoveries, unlicensed smurfs, playsets, smurfy items etc

I was thinking about something.

If we say there are approximatly 450 normal smurfs, 75 supersmurfs and 65 accessories.

And maybe a average of 10 variations of these in paint and markingvariations.

This would mean around 6000 variations. And then many promos, keychains, clips, sharpeners, stands etc. You probably have to add at least around 500-1000 variations more.

That is also why it takes alot of time and dedication for the collectors, when writing about them. So when making my website, I more and more admire the ones who have already done theirs!!

Also the amount of work the administrators of the SCCI must have had in the 80s and 90s. :worship:

And like Jamie wrote in the thread about the websites. The amount of work is daunting. Not only for the programmer, but just think about the work writing about at least 6000 pieces!!

Unless off course making it simple and only using existing lists.

But for a real smurf-lover it is a pleasure! :-D My website will probably takes years though when doing it on free time??

That would also mean about at least 6000 pictures times 2, when also showing the markings!!

How much space do I have??? :-?

If i would have to start now with a file.......................
In the years i always updated it, you ad more details etc etc etc.....

It takes a lot of time and patience, and for the last i am not really famous :-D

My server has unlimited space so I am lucky in that regard..but I guess you now understand why we constantly run at our space limited on this forum :)

I think the most work involved is in the beginning when you set up the website...afterwards if you try to keep it current, it's more like having to spend a couple of hours each week on it, which will be nice...unless you do as I have done..and do an overhaul and then get tired of it in the middle of it.:)

I do admire those who are very dedicated in keeping their websites up to date...I think nothing is sadder than an out of date website...and nothing is better for a smurf collector than being able to go to a website and to know it's pretty much up to date :D

One thing I do like about working on my website is, that even if I don't actively look for new smurfs to buy, working on the site keeps my interest up..and at times lets me rediscover my collection. Since I try to put a little bit of information on it as well, it helps me to research little facts that I would never have even thought about without the site. :D

I don't think there are so many variations on average. From 2.0401 on you won't find a smurf with more than 5 variations...That's a small challenge for you and I'm sure you'll find one. :)
At the moment I have 2.483 variations per smurf until number 2.0232 on average and 1.159 from number 2.0401.

I'm very happy to have started my website quite early, so I don't have to upload too many smurfs at once. But I have a lot of old pictures in bad quality on my website...So there is a lot to do. :???:
I don't have any problems with web space, because I use small .gif pictures -> All my pictures together just need 60 MB. :)

Sounds promissing!!

Then you have 3642 variations, are we talking just normals now???

And say you would like to show one front picture and at least one markingpicture of them, that would mean at least 7284 pictures.

Probably also would like to add some facts to the pictures??? :-?

Lets say you spend maximum 5 minutes per picture, meaning taking it, resizing, and writing a fast short story without having time to do research. That would mean you could do 12 pictures in 1 hour. Meaning 607 hours for all pictures. So if you spent 8 hours a day doing that it would take 75,87 days. So say you worked 21 days each month, means about 3,61 months fulltime. Those are only normals Simon?

Well, no rush. I have time. :-D

Funny that you calculate time spent per picture :)

I calculate time by how long it takes me to create a page. For example, I spend around 30 mins on creating a new page on average..some have taking me an hour to create if I have a lot of variations..and other will take me less.

You also need to consider the time spent on taking the picture as well as editing the picture...I enjoy putting them on the website, but hate editing and naming the pictures :o

Since I don't have to worry about space, I've started using larger pictures, especially for smurfy items as I think those are nicer to look at :D

I don´t calculate like this Maureen, just thought it was funny!!

Once we got a new kid directly from school starting working with us. Just for fun we counted how many hours he had to work before his retirement.

Hi am too lazy for counting smurfs and even lazier to do a website with pics. For that reason I love so much this forum, with all of you ready to spend hours updating your files, your websites and the most important: SHARING WITH US

Anyway, you can always ask me for a pic or for some info if I have it
