I would agree with that. Quark is more, er, milk-like in taste :-?

It tastes especially nice when diluted with a little milk & flavoured with a pinch of salt & eaten with boiled potatoes & freshly chopped chives. Tastes lovely in summer.

Tojo, I couldn't agree more :smitten:.......We now use cottage cheese for that

I used to make a killer Quark auflauf......as a matter of fact we cooked a lot with Quark...now I use either sour cream or cottage chesse :D

It's funny how we have to make do with the ingredients that we can get. Cheddar cheese was hard to get hold of in Germany until recently so I always had to use grated gouda on top of cottage pies which never really tasted the same.

I suppose sour cream would work as a substitite for quark.

There are some products for which I haven't found a substitute for here. One is Marmite of course & the other is golden syrup. You can get maple syrup here but it tastes totally different. I think if I lived somewhere else now then I'd really miss the German bread (by which I don't mean pumpernickel or rye bread but bog standard normal bread). Whenever I visit my parents, after 2 days I can't stand the fluffy, squishy, English bread any more. The only thing it's good for is toasting (or making bread & butter pudding out of).

That is funny, Tojo....I ate a lot of break when I lived in GErmany, but since moving to the States, I hardly ever eat it anymore...

When I was in Stuttgart back in March/April, I couldn't get enough of the Laugenbretzel....:smitten: :smitten: and just the various kind of rolls.....
it's amazing how used you get to food when you have it every day and how much you suddenly miss it when you are gone for a while.... :) :) :)

I make a lot of fun of my German heritage...but there is one thing I have to say....the Germans know how to cook and eat...... :-D
