Hey, I watched an old Dr Who a couple of days ago in which the Doctor got into a fistfight with a British officer.

Before fighting, the Doctor asked, "Queensbury rules?" And the officer agreed.

What are Queensbury Rules? Do Manchester lads say, "Queensbury rules?" before brawling?

(I guess a smurf chatgroup isn't the best place to ask about brawling...)

Well I was watching George of the Jungle for the 50th time the other day and Ape said to George "You know what I said about Queensbury Rules. Forget everything I said".

Then George proceeded to kick the baddies in the groin region. So I am figuring playing by Queensbury Rules means to fight fair!

This is what I found in the net:-

The Queensbury Rules

1. To be a fair stand-up boxing match in a twenty-four foot ring or as near that size as practicable.

2. No wrestling or hugging allowed.

3. The rounds to be of three minutes duration and one minute time between rounds.

4. If either man fall through weakness or otherwise, he must get up unassisted, ten seconds be allowed to do so, the other man meanwhile to return to his corner; and when the fallen man is on his legs the round is to be resumed and continued until the three minutes have expired. If one man fails to come to the scratch in the ten seconds allowed, it shall be in the power of the referee to give his awart in favour of the other man.

5. A man hanging on the ropes in a helpless state, with his toes off the ground, shall be considered down.

6. No seconds or any other person to be allowed in the ring during the rounds.

7. Should the contest be stopped by any unavoidable interference, the referee (is) to name the time and place as soon as possible for finishing the contest, to that the match can be won and lost, unless the backers of the men agree to draw the stakes.

8. The gloves to be fair-sized boxing gloves of the best quality and new.

9. Should a glove burst, or come off, it must be replaced to the referee's satisfaction.

10. A man on one knee is considered down, and if struck is entitled to the stakes.

11. No shoes or boots with springs allowed.

12. The contest in all other respects to be governed by the revised rules of the London Prize Ring.

This is disturbing because despite fighting "Queensbury rules" the Doctor went at it bare knuckles....

Interesting Tojo...I had no idea what it meant before but now I will understand next time I hear it in a movie or...at a pub

I'll be tempted to say it ("Queensbury Rules") if I'm ever in a scrape. The guy would probably be so startled he'd buy me a beer.

Actually, I think bullies felt too sorry for me when I was a kid to want to beat me up. The only fight I was ever in was with another nerd-geek who thought he could be big man above somebody. I gave him two back-fists to the side of the face. I think he might have thrown an equally useless punch back at me. The spectators all had a good laugh. Everybody went home bolder for the experience.

Ah, when smurf (and lego) collectors fight.

Actually, I'm not certain I'd want to be a kid again. Kids get hung up over weird things--like pimples. I mean, if my face erupted tomorrow with a hundred pimples--who cares? I occasionally meet adults who worry about what brand of jeans you wear, but they seem few and far between...

:) :) :) :) :)

I once had a fight when I was 11 over Pseudo Echo versus Dire Straits.....I hated Direw Straits back then but I grew to like them a bit later.

I have only had 2 real fights at 2 different schools against the noted toughest guys at the schools. I was never into fighting but I wasn't that scared of them either.......(I was terrified  )......but because I stood up and took them on (both fights ended up equal with no real winner) it meant that no one else ever tried to pick on me again which meant I could be as silly or as friendly as I liked to anyone and no one would actually fight me. I could then "ACT" tough and not take crap if I needed to without getting hurt. :) I have been really lucky as I have been so close to having so many fights when I was younger but because I was big for my age and could pretend to be tough I found that they would always back out.... :relieved: .....which was good because little Jack now bashes me up after work EVERY day......and does it easily too I might add. :shhh:

Dyar....not quite Tonka Tough
