Here in North-Eastern Italy we have this tradition: preparing very high fires (even 15 metres!); they are burnt on the evening of 6th of January, and from the direction of smoke we "forecast" the future: if smoke goes to East, the year will be good, if goes to West, bad.
It takes days and days to prepare such fires, called "pignarùl", and people work togheter hardly to prepare them.
When burning, we dring hot wine, a lot of sweet hot wine!
It's a Celtic tradition, based on the magic power of fire.
Does anyone of our members have something like that in his land?

That sounds imteresting Max
We have fires here on the winter solstice (21st December) which is possibly part of the same tradition. I know that 'the church' stole lots of celtic / germanic traditions & made them their own so having bonfires on the 6th Jan instead of 21st December would make sense.
It's the same with the bonfires around Halloween / Guy Fawkes etc.... This was the celtic new year so fires were burnt to close the old year & start the new....
I hope your smoke blew in the right direction Max
Joaquin!! Well done on your lottery win mate!!!!!!
