The Economist Magazine's holiday edition published an article on the history of collecting. It goes back to Sumerian times. Yes, Peyo's predecessor molded little brown elves out of cow dung and gave them to eccentric farmers in exchange for beer.

But, seriously, collecting has existed wherever people have had disposable wealth / income.

Well I guess thats when they coined the phrase "I don't think this crappy toy is worth it" .. only 5500 years later we can now utter that same phrase from early civilization across the globe, thanks to Ebay .. cough cough

Great article Tim, Thanks for posting a link to it. I just had a very enjoyable read and could relate to much of the info. I had a laugh at some of the reasons why people collect, I think mine would have to be
an attempt to impose order on a chaotic world.
