Squirrels

I am not sure if you all have problems with them also...but after two years of being able to feed themselves, they are bad again this year and there is no way keekping them off the bird feeders (the corn for the squirrels is right next to the bird feeder, but I guess they prefer bird seed over corn :-? )

We had a bad year so far for gardens, fruits and nuts, so the wildlife is coming out searching for whatever they can get a hold off....

but I was very surprised yesterday when I looked outside and saw a squirrel over the bird bath drinking the water

You know we have a bad dry spell (two rains lately but not enough to make up for the drought yet) when they get on the bird bath... :banghead:

I wanted to take a picture..but boy those are shy and fast buggers 8-) 8-) 8-)

I must admit I've never seen a squirrel in my garden yet although I had a pheasant wandering around once. The most annoying creatures in my garden are the pigeons (not the city sort - we live in the country) which eat the cherries before they're ripe & then shit all over the place  You can imagine the mess.....

It's been much too dry & mild here too & as a result there are a lot of ticks in the grass (the winter wasn't cold enough to kill them off). Sammy our dog keeps being attacked by the horrid things.

Hi Maureen, I loooove squirrels too but boy did we used to have fun with them when we lived in our old house as our garden ran alongside a big woodland. The little buggers used to completely wreck all our birdfeeders, even the squireel-proof ones and even sometimes would run off into the woods with the whole thing.

I remember taking one bird feeder that claimed to be completely squirrel proof back to the pet shop just to show it to the shop owner. Needless to say, they were very shocked and not only gave us another feeder but our money back too! I wouldn't have minded so much but we used to leave food down just for the squirrels......

We did used to have fun though as we used to set up assault courses for them to make them work for their food. It got even more interesting as we had 3 cats at the time. :eyebrow:

Don't worry Gray, they never caught them. :winks:

Cute story Rachel

Mosey, if you think about it, living where you do, i bet you prefer a squirrel to come-a-knocking at your door than some other animals that could come-a-calling, i know i would :D

Think of it as a nice nuisance to have 8-) 8-)

Well, back in Germany I loved to watch the squirrels in the park (I lived in the city).....I grew to hate them when I moved here especially because I made similar experiences as Rachel did :) :) :) two years ago, the dogs took care of the squirrel problem which had grown outrageous by that time and I saved quite a bit on dog food that year.... 8-) 8-)

The squirrels didn't come back for two years, but they are back this year....I can't really blame them this year though, as it is hard for them without any nuts.....

And Beers, you are correct as always...I take squirrels over other animals that could come...although some of them are quite cute, too :) :) :)

I first saw wild squirrels with Steve Parkes on the streets of London and they were such a novelty. Then at Staci's house they were everywhere roaming the streets and I used to love them go about their business.......all I have are big nasty spiders so I would swap them for squirrels anyday.

I don't think you should try and trade Graham though :sprint:

I think Graham just says that he doesn't like them...I have just sent him a huge package full of spiders and eggs which should hatch en route. I bet he thanks me for them and puts an end to this so called dislike for spiders.

I tried to get a good mix but unfortunately I could only find venomous ones around here so I will try to send some harmless ones next time G...this will tie you over until then at least.

Dyar

PS - Maybe he will send me some squirrels as a thank you :D

We have squirrels around here, I just don't see many in my yard. We have mostly wild rabbits. My daughter had a squirrel jump out of a tree and land next to her on a trampoline. She said it started barking at her. I think she is afraid of them now! :scared:

I used to have this trouble in Darwin, Tojo ....but with bats :bat:
We had a mango tree where I used to park my car and they'd eat the mango's and crap all over my car  It was always covered in bat poo and chewed up mango's. ( at least I never had to worry about anyone stealing it ) :)

I don't think I've ever seen a squirrel, Maureen
