Well, it's not St George's Day yet (23 April) but I'm so bloody excited I can't wait to start celebrating.

So:

HAPPY SAINT GEORGE'S DAY!!!!!!!!!

That's like a month long celebration in England, right? Ireland, too? ("Thank you, St George, for delivering us from savagery. God save the queen!")

Oh!! how i wish St George`s day was a huge celebration like St Paddy`s day....sad to say he is often overlooked/forgotten,probably a case now of cruelty to dragons....but strangely he is suddenly remembered when there is a world cup or euro championship on,when there is a St George cross hanging from every other house window or cars are bedecked with them.

So how should we English celebrate...lets see....how about a nice cup of tea and a cream scone

St George is the patron saint of England,and April the 23rd is the day on which we English are SUPPOSED to celebrate him...but usually forget all about it until a week later

The Welsh either wear a leek or a daffodil for St David`s day

The Irish all get boozed up on Guinness and flock to the Cheltenham festival for a week well!!..not really,but if you were there it would seem like it

And the Scots ...i`m not sure what they do,but i did hear a Scottish lady at my Post Office saying she died her hair blue for the day

I think we English should change our patron to St Jude.....

Er, what is St. Jude famous for apart from having a Cornish town named after him/her Is this the patron saint of real ale perhaps? (he asks hopefully)

I live in St Louis, so my patron saint may be a French clown from the 1200s.......

Any idea how St George came to be adopted by England? Historically, I think I heard he was a Roman martyr who died either in North Africa or Turkey/Asia Minor.

But, maybe it's the British in me, I wish St George got a little more respect.

Saint Patricks Day is so overdone it's like Saint Duds/Suds Day.

No, it's like Irish stew. Overcooked and leaves you sick the next morning....

Answer to Tojo.....St Jude is the patron saint of lost causes....well that sums up our cricket team perfectly

Answer to Drunksmurf....i believe St George was from Turkey...or was that Byzantine...any more than that i don`t know

I remember that when I was at primary school, St George's Day was the only day of the year when I didn't have to wear my school uniform. On that day I could wear my Cub Scout uniform if I wanted (which I did). That was back in the early 1970's (the decade of power cuts, sugar shortages, stikes & terrible disco music ).

I had to laugh when I saw your post about St Jude, Elvissmurf, cos I actually knew he was the patron saint of lost causes. I read an article about how all these young singles wear a chain with him on or go to the churches and pray in the hopes of finding love


Interesting topic, Tim. I wonder why St George isn't as popular as St Patrick. Even here in Australia we know more about St Patrick than St George. About the only thing I know about him is there's some bank with his name on it here. I think there may even be a rugby team with the same name too but I'm a West Australian so "what's rugby??". AFL all the way.

I think because the Irish community of New York or Boston started organizing parades and the event drew national attention and caught on. Once it became a hit in the USA, people picked up on it elsewhere.

Does anybody actually keep track of the true dates for these days? I'm sure they must change every year.

St. Patricks Day always seems to be at a weekend when your out on the town and St. Georges day on a day when you're hungover and can't be rst with it - maybe why it passes u by (not that all days are noted by a drinkie of course )
