So we must remember this book is only a guide, it is not always correct, it is up to us as an individual to check with the seller or another knowledgable smurfer as to what you are thinking of buying :D
:iagree:

And this is why this forum is so valuable! :D

Sorry, still have had a moment to sit down and go through the DSK but another one that springs to mind is the lilac baseball catcher. The ones in the DSKs are definitely the normal white ones with the purple / lilac colours added to the pics. :D

Why is it called "common sense" when it is so rare.......

It is interesting to know different opinion about DSK...When the new DSK will be avaliable, I will order inmediately, because as Graham says, it is a guide...I always use it at fairs because I have written in it what I have and what I need, and because my english is not rich in vocabulary, I say to the sellers: do you have this one or this other one, pointing at the smurf!!!!!

@Rachel: lila catcher!!!!!100% agree...

Do you know that the website of Gaschers is (since a few days) now also avaible in English?

http://www.gaschers.com/

About errors...The most were already mentioned...I found this:

p241, promo sockel, Christmassmurf: The picture shows another text than the text below...But maybe I only doesn't look right... :) :D

Ok you've asked so I feel obliged to say my bit about the DSK:

Let's start with:

(DSK IV)

p294 item 116: what a beautiful Macca dipped in blue! (Original are all white btw) => 100 Euros! Why? (should be in the "Plagiate" section)

P294 item 117: homemade brass paracodin found by Polobrocante in Belgium: never claimed it was real, easy to make, still 400 Euros

p293 item 102, item 101, typical fake made with SLA resine rapide prototyping (same goes for p291 item 82)

p221 item 207 : BT newspaper, made by a really cool guy in Germany. Always said it was homemade: made a few 10s of. Now in DSK? beats me.

p221 item 201, 202: wrong prices for wrong pictures and text does not match. This however I believe to be a genuine mistake. But that's why you see the belgium olympic torchbearer on eBay at stupid prices.

p218 item 176: Fake version of item 177

p215 item 152 : Just for a laugh...

p210 : Funny how many of these Shell and Sparkasse there are now.. never been that many before... Ah yes there was THAT homemade shell logo stamp :):)

I wont bore you with all the Kwak items in the Supersmurfs classed as "testversion". (p189,191,192,193)

p180, 4.0203 item 5 & 6: is it just me or is it obvious what has been done with a green tricycle?

p110 2.0190 : Rachel you will recognise the A versions... I am not sure if the sentence in bold points out they are fakes. If it does, then in true pirate language "we have an accord".

p109 2.0188: Ooohh the nice blue and the nice beige Smurfette... Shame they are total repaint jobs...

p95 2.0160 : Could that shiny red apple be real? Even Snow white is out for the count on that one

p88 2.0146 : already discussed above

p62 2.0093 : white ant pink racket? come on give me a break

and it gets worse:

p59 2.0088 : green bag from paddington bear... why?

p31 2.0032 : blue hockey sticks from Mickey mouse figurine... why are they here?

Come on, and that's just for starters after looking at the DSK for 5 minutes. I haven't even bothered with the dodgy paint variations.

I hear you loud and clear when you say that it is very difficult to put this information together because of the amount there is to compile: Mistakes are possible, for sure, the Torchbearer is a proof of that. but it does not explain the rest, I 'm sorry it just doesn't.

It's ok to be unsure about something but in that case you just don't put it in or you mark it clearly that you don't know if it is real or not.

There is a certain responsibility in writting such a book, particularly when you have reached edition 4 and the previous editions have established the book as a bible for collector, so much so that they can't wait for edition 5?

Sorry if I don't join you with anticipation on that one... I think I'll go and read one of my children's Fairy Tale instead. (at least on it, it is what's written on the tin: A fairy tale).

By the way: I make no apologies for the comments above. Take it or leave it. If some people get upset by it, then my advice is "wake up". I have.

@ xoiox
what I know by heart
p31 2.0032 the blue hockey stick itself is a true part of an ice-hockey smurf but from the Commerbank/MERC promo.
It also stated in the DSK III/IV the ice hockey smurf with red material/blue stick is existing.
The Mickey Mouse blue/green/white/yellow/red stick is is not the same compared to the blue smurf stick...
But I will take a look in the evening into the DSK IV to verify the other stuff

Dragon...................... :winks:

If only people would listen and not buy these things, we as collectors would be better off !

Well done for giving an honest opinion ! :D

Big up for the man in the green scaley suit

Yes that's valid for Number 6: correct color. Not for number 3 though.

Excellent post, Dragon. I agree with you and I think that's why I rarely look at the DSK. :-? If a group of collectors, such as our group, instead of sellers, were to collaborate, we could come up with a much better documented smurf "bible" :D

1) I had no idea the DSK had so many real errors. I thought there was only a few wrong pics and names. I always knew that the prices were wrong but I didn't know there were so many fake pics etc. The katalog has only been a good help when I finished my normals and supers. At least they are in some kind of order, right?

2) Why doesn't someone else make a smurf katalog? I know people here at the forum have many great websites but those are a bit hard to carry along when shopping for smurfs. Why doesn't somebody make one book for normals then another for supers and then another for kindersmurfs and another for promos etc. Why do we settle for this kind of guide? I'm absolutely sure that if we put our force together, we could make a better guide(s). How do you comment on this?

I agree with you there, Yonna, but I think it is very difficult to get permission to do such a catalog and then probably difficult to get it published :-? But one by the collectors for collectors should be a must have :D As for pricing, that fluctuates so much with the market and now with ebay out there, who knows what the real fair market value is for any smurf.

Hi David, great post. :clap2:

Many of the ones you mentioned, I didn't even to check for as I knew exactly which they were.

Regarding the ice cream smurfettes, the footnote does translate as:
There are smurfettes with colored scoops whose authenticity could not be proven (A). 12,00 each.
I did know about these before we bought them, I do find it interesting the prices though. :D
p218 item 176: Fake version of item 177
Can you give any more info on this one David as I hadn't heard there was a fake verion of it. :-D

Is'nt the guy who wrote the book a collector too ? :-?

And the book comes from gathering information from many people's collections ? :-?

I still like the DSK, it is good to know if people can spot a fake from a real smurf, which was why i stated previously that it is up to us as collectors to check what we are buying and if you are not sure, seek guidance from someone who does !

I look forward to DSK 5, i hope there are new items in it as i am sure there will be, but remember, the DSK is still the best book available to us !

No hobby is perfect, we just have to be careful :D

:-D

I agree a collector's book done by collectors is great

I think the copyright issue might be the hardest thing to overcome :-?

If every or every interested collector on this forum would be willing to give their input and pictures of some of their special smurfs for the book, we could come up with a fantastic book....and I guess we could price everything with an average price :-?

I know we have a lot of experts on this forum for every little different smurf related item and this catalog could include smurfs, comics, smurfy items and I don't know know what else :-D

Graham, the guy who wrote the DSK is a seller most of all...He is the Gaschers.

but I agree, the DSK is the best guide out there so far :D
