Just thought I'd start a thread on peoples thoughts on Pop Rocky smurfs.
I recently saw what I would class as a 'genuine' Pop Rocky smurf on ebay, it was a gold one with the actors name on..it sold for 700 euros.

I recently put in a 'best offer' for a Pop Rocky on ebay for 350 euros (which got rejected by the seller). The reason I didn't 'buy it now' for 450 euros is that I believe it to be a faked one. It had no plaque, and seemed to me to be leaning a little too far back. I have seen that there has been a mold made of the Pop Rocky's, just wondered what everyones thoughts were?

Hi Steve,
this is a very interesting question. I never thought about fakes of Pop Rocky smurfs but it would make sense as they aren't common at all..

I, personally, wouldn't buy one that doesn't come with the plaque and the name of the artist who won it. I guess, it could be easy to see if the plaque was attached to it at one point but it doesn't seem complete to me without the name of the winner of the Pop/Rocky smurf :-?

Of course, if somebody were to offer one to me, there is no telling what I would do :D

Pop/Rocky was a German Teenager magazine (not sure it's still being published). I read it religiously in the 80s (much like "Bravo") and it had news/gossip about all the big music stars/actors and also posters of them in there.
Every year, the readers got to vote on their favorite stars in different categories, and the ones with the most votes received a Golden Pop/Rocky smurf, the second place a silver one and the third place a bronze one (if I remember correctly)

here is a picture of the smurf in the auction

One of the catalogs has pictures in the back of some of the stars that won them...if I can dig it out today, I will post some of them. I think KISS won one...and of course Nena...to name only two :D (just about every artist that was big in Germany at the time won one, I think :D )

I hope I remember it all correctly though :scratchinghead:

That pic takes me back a few years when you sent it to me via email....I kept both of them on my pc for the day I meet the guys and take them hostage until they gurantee to send me at least one of Pop Rockys.

I got a pic with Nena's when I was last in the Netherlands with Christy which I am very proud of.....the guy wouldn't allow to leave his house with it though.....party pooper :???:

I wouldn't mind getting my hands on this one :-D

I never was the biggest Nena fan...but I loved that song....It was one of the first Pop songs I fell in love with and I remember singing it in front of my mirror with a brush in my hand and dancing around the room

Interesting discussion Steve, these are such nice smurfs. :-D

Going back a few years to when Pete had one and then discovered it was a fake because he had problems with his because the arm was "drooping". Looking at the 2 that were recently up for auction both of these look to have the same problem. Also, interesting to note that the one with the plaque -
http://cgi.ebay.de/Pop-Rocky-Starwahl-S ... dZViewItem

it's plaque is very different to any of the Pop Rocky's featured in the Schleich book. They are all the same as the figure in Dyar's pic. :-?

Why is it called "common sense" when it is so rare.......

Cheers Rachel, my thought exactly..I too noticed the 'droop' of the hammer and the slight backwards lean of the smurf, which is why I wasn't prepared to spend huge amounts on the smurf..I've now made my own from a left over hammer smurf, some gold spray paint and a brown wooden block :)
