My apologies if this has been asked before, but I'm getting confused. Nothing new there, I here you cry! :-D

I have some Panini stickers from 1982 and some, higher numbers, from 1985. Are they 2 different sets? Did the 1985 set carry on the numbers from 1982? Or are there 2 sticker sets going up to nearly 300?

There are two sets of 1980's stickers.
One is from 1982 and has the famous album with the Smurf presenting a flower to the Smurfette on green background. This collection has been translated in many languages and is made up of 180 stickers.
The other set is from 1986 and is known as "The parade of smurfs" or "Schtroumpfsparade" and is made up of 240 stickers.
The new set of stickers from 2000's is the reporter smurf story, and is also made up of 240 stickers plus the stickers with letters for the centerfold poster.

Interesting, never knew that. So in terms of the packets they came in I have one packet from 80s with 3 smurfs singing on it (middle one has sheet music) and the 90s one which has a thumbs up smurf in a kind of 'follow me' gesture. Which 80s packet is that or did they both have same style packet?

The "thumbs up smurf in a kind of 'follow me' gesture" are from Merlin, not Panini. That collection is also made up of 180 stickers, plus 30 more cardboards.
