(Inspite of a very unusual strike of the mailmen in Holland, which is pretty unpleasant and lasts 3 days, but only for letters, not for packages), I received today my first w.berrie smurfs in package.
I like them a lot! :D
From various sites, I understand there are variations in the years and the backside and also different versions of the way, they are wrapped.
Does anyone know how many exist?

I honestly have no idea, Lia...everytime I think I know, I find more :banghead:

I would not be surprised to find out that they were sold like this in the US by W.Berrie..so my guess right now is that all the smurfs sold in the US during the early 80s should be found in the green or blue package (depending on the year they were sold).

ohhhhh :eh: it`s good that I know this!
I won`t try to get all of them then. ;-)

Yes,

that must be hard to find out.

If you check the 1982 variation they say there are 24 figurines possible on the backside.

But W Berrie sold 75 normal smurfs in spring 1982, so it is hard to say which are possible on these cards??? :-? The only way is if a US collector have them all and cann tell us this.

It is also good to see that they did not mark the smurfs with W Berrie in 1982. As told you before they started with this around 1983.

I have 19 of them but 3 are the same. Cook I think. I kind of stumbled onto them on ebay one day. They were cheap so I bid and won. I also have a few supers on the blue cards.

Thanks Bill!
Indeed there are probably only 24 of them,( if you don`t count the variations that I saw on Maureens, Christy`s and Dyars site)
There`s a lovely Canadian variation on Dyars site.
In 1982, they were probably $1,- but they are no longer that cheap, I fear :(

In the late 80's and early 90's these packs were in every dollar store selling for 50 cents a piece. That is why I have large quantities of particular Smurfs, unfortunately they are no longer in packages because I used them throughout my dioramas. And back then, I didn't have the internet to share with others as to what figures were more desirable, that's why I altered and created my own Smurfs because they were so cheap, example; the picture of the School Cone Smurfs.

Yes, I think, everyone was amazed about your amount of school cones))
50 cents sounds incredible to me.
In Holland, smurfs were never that cheap and a schoolcone has never been sold at all in the shops.
Thanks to the internet, we can have them in our collections now :D
And smurfs in these w.berrie packages have almost become collectors items

Nice to see that Ganz was the company selling these in Canada for Schleich then.

Over 100 smurfs possible so there are more to find. :o

So true!!! :D When I started collecting (as a kid), I came across some lovely variants without realizing that there was so much more to be found. :D

For that reason, I think Michelle's quote sums it up perfect:
"Once a smurfer, always a smurfer."
