I think both the Schwäbish Gmünd and Belgian Lion are almost exactly the same, both are yellow and black.

The thing I wanted to say is that it was NOT made in 1980.

However there is one thing telling us it could be the belgium lion.

I am pretty sure the reason Schleich started with smurfs again in 1976 was the movie shown in Belgium then. And that BP then wanted smurfs for their promotion again. So therefore it could very well be the belgium lion.

BUT then made around 1977 instead. AND then later also used by the Belgium Ski team in 1980.

There is one important difference between the two lions

The schwabisch Gmund one is black on yellow background...the Belgium one is yellow on black background...when you talk about Coat of arms it's an important difference.

I don't have a problem accepting the smurf was made before 1980 and it makes sense to make it for the movie..and then use it for the Olympics as well. It certainly would explain why it's so common

The reason I am pretty sure Schleich started making smurfs for promotional purposes in 1976/77 is a thing that comes back from their early history and also the Bully history!!

I bought this comic about a year ago and it is the same as the one shown in the advert.

On the back you see the belgium torchbearer and it was used 1979.

Definatly used as a belgium logo then. I do not know if it was the first release, but it could have been the first release???

It is still a bit funny though that the picture of the Flandern-flag on the post Christy wrote in this thread looks exactly like the one used for Schwäbish Gmünd. Yellow background and black lion.

We know it existed before 1978 and the most logic thing since it is a torchbearer is that it represents Belgium. Torchbearers to me are connected to the olympic games and then Belgium would be correct.
