Hi,

I just thought of something when thinking about when they started marking the Hongkong-smurfs W Berrie. How many smurfs are there with both Hongkongmarking and the year 1982? I don´t have them listed like that but I had a quick look at Dyars site and so far I only found one, smurf with rake. Are there more??? :? Don´t care if they are marked W berrie or not.
André

In Sweden the smurfs are blue ( and yellow).

I have got 21 different smurfs with Hong Kong '81 and 20 with Hong Kong '83, but not a single one with Hong Kong '82.

It's your turn to interpret that. :)

It almost seems that the gardener with the rake is the only one?? :-?

And as you say Simon there are lots lots of Hongkong-smurfs with the years 1981 and 1983. And since we all know that the smurfs peaked around the year 1982, at least in the US, this seems extremly odd. Many, many smurfs were made in 1981 and 1983 but only ONE made in 1982??

Also the fact that it was around the year 1982 that all hongkong-molds with a year earlier than 1980, was changed to 1980.

So the facts are like these I think.

All smurfs made in Hongkong pre 1982 or 1982 can be found without W Berrie. And all smurfs with the year 1983 or higher always had W Berrie, Applause etc.

And I would also think that no smurf made in Hongkong after 1982 and with a moldyear before 1980 was ever changed.

Something definatly happened in 1982 in the Hongkongfactory!! :D

Maybe I should clearify this:

"And I would also think that no smurf made in Hongkong after 1982 and with a moldyear before 1980 was ever changed. "

I mean smurfs like tailor, naughty, cushion etc. Smurfs made after 1982 in Hongkong but with moldyears like, 1973, 1975, 1979 etc. Those ones you can never find with the yearmarking changed to 1980. On the other hand all made before 1982 can be found with the year changed to 1980?? :-?

Hi André,

I can confirm that I do not have any smurfs marked '82 from Hong Kong. Just like TinTin, a lot of them are '81 and '83.

Cheers,
Jo

Can you tell me which smurfs you have seen with the W.B.Co marking?

Maybe Simon and Frank has this in their files?? :-?

I only have the different boxes I have in my file. But I have not written down which markingvariations I have on the smurfs. :banghead: But then it is good to have this forum so I can go back and see what I have written.

All these smurfs were sold in US by W Berrie during 1982. Except Joggingsmurfette. Do you have that one? I would like to see a picture of it. Is it the correct base? Where is the marking?? :-?

I don`t have it, but I remember having seen one with markings on the base. (I have the w.berrie one )
Of course, the base could have been wrong, I hope, someone can show us one!!

Thanks Lia,

Until I see that one I would say it is wrong.

I hope I don´t have to regret writing that. :banghead:

It is marked 1984 and it seems odd if it was marked like that in 1984??? That one was among the last 5 smurfs made with the W berrie and Hongkong.

Your pictures are very nice Jo

I think this picture from 3 of my Gargamelsupers made in Hongkong can explain the marking I am looking for. It is not easy to understand without a picture so I should have added one in the beginning. :D

As you the gargamel to the left only has made in Hongkong. That was the one used before 1982.

In the middle: Approximatly 1982/83 they started adding the large marking W.B.Co on the smurfs. This is the marking I think you never can find on a Hongkongmold made 1983 or later. :-?

To the right you can see the marking they used on the smurfs made in Hongkong from 1983. Then they used the complete name W Berrie.

In around 1984 W Berrie changed name to Applause so during that year they made a few smurfs with both companies names on the smurfs. Like approximatly W Berrie Div Applause Inc.

In 1985 they made some smurfs with only Hongkong again. So no W Berrie or Applause. Those were the last ones marked Hongkong. For example Angel or Devil.

The same mold was used all the time and it can also be found with changed yearmarking to 1980.

This was made before the W.B.CO marking.

And I don´t think you can have a smurf with both changed yearmarking and W.B.CO-marking?? :-?

Thanks for the pics and for explaining it to me, André & Lia,

I didn't know about the differences with the Berrie markings because I've never seen a smurf with the W.B.Co marking - I've only ever seen them with the complete name! I also don't own any Applause smurfs. My bank balance is in danger with all these new smurfs I need to find
:)

I have lots to learn ......

I wish to add Smurfette in Bunny Suit, 20497.

Markings under feet/basket: Made in Hong Kong Schleich S 1982 Peyo (c)

There must be more out there somewhere.......

Regards
Kath
