And a good book is Der Schlumpf katalog which has pictures of all the smurfs with tick boxes so you can keep a record of what you've got.

I did put a checklist together which catered for other items like raws, sockels, promos, fakes as well as the normal figure. I use mine now but if you have any troubles K then let me know. The reason the project halted was because it took forever to photograph the pics which was the only thing I needed to complete it....but if we can use your pics from the shop then I can send you what I have if it makes it quicker?

I keep up with my collection by using the list on Pauli's page: http://users.utu.fi/~pataka. It doesn't show the variations, but it's pretty easy to follow up with those by reading Mushroomvillage's idguide.

I need to ask about this katalog. Why is it called IV meaning number 4? Is there earlier versions too? Is this IV totally extensive?

It goes up to 2003 New Generation Smurfs.

There are earlier versions, yes, the latest is the best, the earlier ones are good for determining when these so-called test versions were discovered (cough cough).

Just to throw a bit of a spanner in the works, but as a bit of a warning about the katalog:

Some entries are a little, how can I say this, doubful, for a better word... and the prices seem to suit some people... so just be aware that it may not always be a true repesentation of reality and use your better judgement.

Yes I agree with David. Basically a smurf should always be worth what "you" want to pay for it, there is no great "Smurf God" out there who decides all the prices. Prices should come down to good old supply and demand and I think you can work out for yourself if you are finding it hard to get a certain smurf then it is going to cost you a little extra.

There are different brands of catalogs, but the one we are talking about is down to its fourth incarnation.
The first one appeared in 1995, and was in black and white. Then in 1997-1998, a second, larger edition in colours appeared. Third edition in 2000, and fourth (current) edition in 2003, in Euros.

Every edition was more exhaustive than the previous one. Still, many variations aren't mentioned (certainly markings are missing, but also true colour, shape and size variations), while some dubious (i.e. fake) variations are included, either as test variations or without that remark.
Furthermore, info on the playsets and buildings is still very limited, and basically everything after the pages listing the normal, X-mas an dsuper smurfs should be taken as tentative (though even so it is a very good resource).

It is a reasonable possibility that the members of this board will compose a list of all known variations of all Schleich Smurf products (plus fakes), based on their own collections. While this list as well will be incomplete, it will be based on a larger and more international sample (the DSK is German based), and perhaps more discussion about real vs. fake (and all shades inbetween) will happen.
Perhaps an effort can be made to create an online catalogue (like some members already have, e.g. BlueImps), as that can be updated swiftly and accessed easily. The big problem is webspace, I presume.
