Don't forget EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS in Spanish cultures.
November 1st is their "day of the dead".

I think I'm starting to see what Karen meant about commercialism. The good old days when smurfs each represented, more or less, a vice and Papa Smurf was their fatherly shepherd are over.

THese smurfs are just monsters, not characters. (Let me re-state, though, that my eye popped when I saw them--I adore the new smurfs)

On the other hand, didn't Peyo start going commercial back in the 1980s?

I mean, if he had kept true to his comic, smurfs toys would all be medieval characters with medieval-looking tools. I think the Olympic set in the late 1970s/early 1980s broke that mold--turning smurfs into Olympic merchandise.

Granted, such tactics are probably what rocketed the smurfs to international standing. Asterix, for example, has little brand recognition in the United States except among eclectic Europhiles. The Asterix brand kept faithfully to its niche (yet, I concede: Asterix remains alive and well to this day despite not sending Asterix to football camp and not dressing him as Santa).

Wait till you see the latest (and probably last) Asterix comic... It basically ruins everything Asterix stands for.
:sheep: Bored of normality, why not go smurf? :sheep:

What happens? I learned to read French with Asterix's help, but all the comics here date from the 1960s...

I bought the new Asterix book on the day it was released here in Germany. I was really looking forward to it but was terribly disapointed. What were they thinking about? :banghead: The drawings as always are excellent but the story, well.....

New smurfs look as good as always, but personally I´m very disappointed with Schleich. I´ve always liked original looking smurfs and until 1980´s everything was fine (with few exception). After that there´s been many "modern time" smurf which look great, but doesn´t follow original idea of smurfs.
I´d be thrilled to see smurfs with white trousers, white cap no shirt, running, jumping, sitting, etc. As seen on comics.
2005 smurfs gave hope for better future, but this Halloween theme doesn´t appeal to me at all. Cool figures, yes. Smurfs, no :???:

Apparently, it isn't the last one, the artist has another story he wants to do. I thought it was absolutely terribly horrible. People at my comics shop said some collectors didn't even buy it, it was so bad.
