Hi, has anyone, especially in the USA, done anything about filing their smurfs with their home insurers?

Do you suppose we should (ulp) photograph each one, store the photos on a CD, and put the CD somewhere fireproof?

Anyone ever filed an insurance claim against smurfs damaged in a house fire or house flood?

6 years ago I had a fire where I lived . We lost everything except the cloths we was wearing . We were insured up to a certain amount and that was all we got witch was not a lot because I always thought oh nothing will ever happen but since then we have raised our insurance by a lot we were actually thinking about raising it again I know you can go over it with your insurance broker and tell them what you have and what it is worth . You put it under your home owners or renters insurance
Your broker will help you out with any questions .

I have insurance for the house contents for a fair amount...I forget how much now but it would probably be enough to cover the smurfs as well now even though I did it before I started collecting a couple of years ago. I might have to see a broker about things since I have now have smurfs coming out of our ears.

I've never had to claim on it.. but my website was to show my collection to the insurance people. No point burning a CD as this gets out of date but a website resides in virtual world and if the host goes down then you simply upload another copy elsewhere and let the insurance people know where to look. I now have a website dedicated to my house and contents insurance that links to all my other collection sites including the smurfy one. (Help I can't escape.. I'm getting all tangled up in the world wide web).

As far as how much the collection is worth I simply referred them to some online smurf shops for a comparison and estimated my collection at around a certain figure.. ditto with the CD, DVD and chess set collections. Simply calculating via the average value, multiplied by the number of items. Not too scientific but they didn't argue. I guess when it comes to smurfs they were too afraid to ask.

I haven't insured my Smurfs separately. I have insured my books (and comics especially) for a fair amount though, but also by a pretty easy method: take the running metres and multiply by X I was amazed at the time of the value, but I haven't burned them down yet

I emailed my broker about a month ago but haven't heard anything back from her. Thanks for the reminder I will let you know what she comes back with.

At the time we got our home insurance our agent said that we could have a add on insurance for any of our collectables as long as we have some record of what we have. I have not insured them yet, but I have been takeing pictures of all my smurf stuff and from time to time burn a cd for it. But I have thought about getting insurance for all the collectables seperate for the reason our insurance wont cover everything if I do loose it all... Maybe it is time for me to get off my butt and work on that.

HI Tim, I asked our company about it a while back and was told everyting was automatically covered as long as an individual item wasn't worth more than a certain amount. I am still looking into getting the collection insured as a whole though as I would prefer to be safe than sorry.

I agree it is a good idea to have everything recorded somewhere safe.

Hi Tim, we have our smurf collection insured as we have quite a lot of smurfs especially promo smurfs. We haven't ever put an insurance claim in and god forbid we hope not to have to Lucie

Hey, thanks for all the responses. After reading Gerda and Syd's responses, I think I fall into the ballpark where if my house were to burn to the ground, the insurance company would give me a flat settlement.

I guess, sentimentality aside, my smurf collection is worth less than a big screen TV coupled with a sound system... (but try replacing the little blue demons... the money would be more like a consolation prize...)

Maybe I should just be proactive and construct a bomb shelter.

Not bad thinking Tim. I agree, I don't think it would be possible to replace all of my little guys again.
