Hi, is there any significance behind the Land Hockey Smurf w/ striped red and white jersey? (normal color green with brown shorts)

Was he intended for a specific country? I mean, it seems somebody at Schleich went out of their way to redesign him (most of the paint variants seem to boil down to what paint was on-hand, like a yellow-scarf "shiver" instead of red-scarf "shiver").

Hi Tim, to be honest I really don't know. I am not a massive hockey fan (although I used to love playing it at school) so I have no clue as to team colours.

I *think* the black shorts, white shirt variation of the hockey smurf are the German colours but this is just a guess. As for the stripes, you could well be right about, they could just be random colours.

Where is land hockey played? We don't have it as a sport in the USA, even in highschool gym class.

At my school we played a version of "gym hockey" with a plastic puck on a basketball court, but not field hockey.

Gym hockey was one of the few sports I was any good at....

I played Hockey for my school...I even broke the Hockey stick in my very first game.....must of been my power hitting......either that or we just had very cheap equipment.

Only the girls played hockey at our school. We had to play football (soccer) & rugby. Once in a while we played softball too. I was useless at all games though as I couldn't see anything without my glasses on

I was a bit of a sport nut so I ended up playing Baseball, Rugby league, rugby union, touch football, Australian football, soccer, hockey, basketball & volleyball throughout my school days. I miss playing competitive sports though....I also miss the fitness

What is the difference between Australian Rules Football and Rugby? (I guess Japan really plays "Japanese Rules Baseball" because they have some surprisingly different rules than we do).

Peyo must have been something of a jock himself. For a toy associated (in America) with girliness, I think smurfs have done more to export Lad Culture world-wide (Peyo's dad was a Brit) than even British football. I mean, smurfs represent every sport, including hooliganism (2004 soccer smurf with antlers). And when you consider smurfettes tend to be blondes in miniskirts, Peyo seems to have suffered a major case of Lad-ism. Whenever I hear that Chumbawumba song ("Tubthumping"), I imagine smurfs carousing the pubs of Amsterdam.

Australian Football is closer to Gaelic Football which is nothing like American Football or even really like any of the Rugby codes. The game revolves around kicking the football more than actually running with it. The idea is to kick the ball downfield and get in a position where youc an kick the ball between the posts. There are 4 posts next to each other without any crossbars. If you kick it in the centre then you get 6 points and if you miss and it goes inbetween the posts on each side then you get 1 point. Scores usually end up over 100 and it's the only sport I know of where you actually are awarded 1 point for missing the main objective.
