Hi Evensar,

It all depends what you mean by history of course: if it is in terms of their creation, about Peyo, ... ect... then a good place to start is the official site:
http://www.smurf.com/

If you are talking about the actual chronological stories of the Smurfs themselves, then of course you need to dig in the comics. The original albums are the best(1) and they came out long before the TV cartoons

(1) This is only my opinion: Many forum members actually prefer the cartoons!! :):):)

The Wikipedia pages about Smurfs and Peyo offer a lot of information as well, and some further links. And the histroy of the Smurfs has been discussed here haphazardly insome threads, but not in a consistent manner.

The Studio Peyo is still very active, making many drawings for commercial products, short stories for magazines, and comic-length stories as well. The most recent comic appeared in january. You can read a bit more in the "comics" section of this forum.
No cartoons are being made, but there are very concrete plans (perhaps work is being done as well) for three 3D animated movies, the first one to appear in 2008 (the 50th anniversary of the Smurfs).

Paramount, I believe, but they have cooperated with Pixar before. Certainly one of the majors, so that looks good!

Check out the "News" Section of the official web site: Right down the bottom it says:

"Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies have acquired the film rights to the vintage worldwide cartoon icons THE SMURFS for producer Jordan Kerner and his Kerner Entertainment banner. The fully 3DCG film will be written by Herb Ratner."

As Pixar has been aqcuired by Disney (Since Jan 2006) they are not likely to be involved.

Dreamworks Animation is normally the company that Paramount uses for their 3D graphics. They have recently signed a new distribution deal with Paramount which will carry them out until 2012. This was following a bad year (2005) for both companies. Previously Dreamworks had big successes with "Ice Age" and "Shrek".

Despite "Shrek 2" not performing at the box office as well as they expected, "Shrek 3" is already in the pipeline.

There is however no official word out yet if they are going to do the CGI for the smurfs... we shall wait and see...

Of course, for the lunatics in Hollywood, "not performing well" means only a 20% return on investment..... Most other industries count their blessings on a 7% return....
