Hi,

I have a question for you about the large smurfs made for Dupuis.

We have seen the large ones with the marking Peyo Dupuis and a number. 3 smurfs, tiroler, digger and lute.

But I also have this one with the marking Götz. I think it is the same as the company that makes dolls. Götz Puppen.

Lia told me she had heard there are eleven smurfs in this serie. Do anyone have pictures of them?

I have a picture of one more.

I was told these Götz smurfs were used in the shopwindows as displays?? Could of course have been in comic-stores if Dupuis order them??

It is like hard PVC or vinyl???

Reminds a bit of the 3 Dupuis smurfs I have which are 3 apples high. Angry, papa and normal( still miss the king). Those are very soft and kind of squeacky toys. This is very hard but still I think the looks a bit like tem??

One funny thing with the "gardensmurfs" are that they look a lot like the ones Schleich and Bully made. Just a lot larger.

For example this gardener. Both the smurf and the wheelbarrow looks them same as the Schleichs gardener. There are a lot of ways to make a wheelbarrow, even when comparing to the comics, but it is made almost exactly like the Schleich wheelbarrow, right!

Götz made dolls during these years in the late 70s when these approximatly were made.

When comparing with markings on the dolls I would guess they made the smurfs to??

And the material reminds of the material they used for dollsheads, if you know what I mean. But still very hard.

And the person I got the gardener from told me he bought it from a lady who owned a shop. And she told him the shops had these in the windows as decoration, displayed. They did not sell them in the shops.

But that´s just what I was told and don´t know for sure.

Perhaps it`s not unusual that doll`s factories make smurfs?

I have a smurf, made by the german famous doll company Schildkröt.

I used to collect antique dolls and I had a Schildkröt doll, the company still exists in Germany and for me, it was a surprise to get a smurf, made by them.

When I asked the company what year it was made, they answered that it was too long ago and they did not have that info in their archives.

I think Peyo or Dupuis could have had many of these items made in the mid or late 70s when the smurfs hit the cinemas. Just like today. I like these items from the early years when the smurfs were not that big. In those days I don´t really think that fakes existed ( not that common anyway?? ) and therefore they are most likely licensed items.

I would guess the Götz smurfs are from around 1977-1979.???
Off course peyo could have had Götz making these in the 80s also just for the shops selling smurfs or comics??? But owners seems to say they are from the 70s.??

Here is another advert with smurfs in gold and silver. Seems like some kind of plush??? The company is called ISI.

It is from 1979. And this also shows that between 1976 and 1980 a lot of companies made different smurfitems. Off course these could have been in some case used and sold by the company having the rights for selling the smurfs. For example BP in Australia had the rights for selling smurfs there but also had a lot of different companies making different smurf-items for them with license.

Just like the bendys and lots of other items they spread the world in different bags and by different toydealers wanting to put their name on them also!!

A funny thing is that without the wrapping and the sticker it probably or maybe don´t have any marking. And then when somebody finds it today they would maybe say that it is a unmarked fake from China, right??

That`s quite well possible
I can`t find any markings on the smurf ( unlike the dolls who have a schildkröt (= turtle) mark in the neck)

If you check Dyars site he has a couple of different variations of the papa. It seems it was sold with Dupuis-marking or sticker in France. He has it with Peyo and Kehl, and Dupuis and Peyo and also unmarked.

I think it could be like the bendy smurfs. They had different markings in different countries. I have it with Brabo from sweden and also another marking from France. And then Dyar has a made in Macau marking to with Ceppiratti.

Regarding the Schilkröt. Maybe they did not make it?? Maybe only sold it?? What is Kehl? Dealer or manufacturer?

And since Dyar has it with Dupuis marking I would guess it was used in the late 70s also and then maybe picked up and used for other markets later??? If BP Australia sold it in 1980 I would guess it was sold in maybe around 1977-1979 in Europe??

Yes these are very hard indeed.

Then I would guess the same company made them all.

Maybe they started up with 3 and then made 8 more. It seems they were used in Sweden. Bully had the license here then. the other picture is also from a Swedish collector. Probably used in other countries also off course.

I think,Kehl is a german town where a Schildkröt shop or factory was/is.
