Reason Magazine ran an article a few weeks back titled:

"A Pictorial Guide to Bums"

Wow! I was there! Expected something akin to Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.

Uh, no. It was a comic strip surveying the plight of the homeless (bums) in San Francisco......

In a work email, we were advised to always store laptop (computers) in the trunk if we have to leave them unattended. I don't keep a portmanteau in my car, so I asked a coworker if it would be OK to store the laptop in the boot. He took a look at my shoes and suggested I not try it.....

At least my French coworker stopped me from writing: "Finish the bloody report" on my cubicle whiteboard. "That's a swear word, right?" he warned me.

But, I can say "shag" at work and nobody cares. But, shag and fuck aren't interchangeable, right? I mean, when you're upset, you don't say: "Why the shag would I want to do that?" Shag is just an impolite word for sex, not an all-purpose expletive?

To my credit, though, I'm not such a Brit-wannabe that I call French Fries "Chips". That's really pretentious if you weren't born with a British accent.

Example: "Hey mate, pass the chips."
Response: "Quit being a dork. You're not British."

 But chips aren`t french fries....chips are big chunky grease laden things, french fries are spindly little things not worth cooking....there really is no comparison.

I had a similar conversation with my Danish friend not so long ago, when she called crisps chips...then looked at me in disbelieve when i called a potato a spud :)

Wasn`t shag a 60`s dance or is it a sea bird :)

And as for the F word...it used to be daubed on the stocks and stood for "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge".

Anyone for a pasty? :)
I'll 'ave a Ginsters if you've got one please - the ones from Ivor Dewdney's always gives me stomach ache :???: There's a Dewdney's shop in Exeter too & the pasties there have the same effect.

Mostly I eat the ones from the Oggy Oggy Pastie shop - yummy yummy.

I must admit that pasties are one of the things that I miss most of all now that I don't live in Devon anymore :(

 from someone feeling very homesick :(

We call your "chips" "steak fries" or "fries".
And as for the F word...it used to be daubed on the stocks and stood for "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge".
I think this is folk etymology of backward formation. "Fuck" traces back to a Germanic root for copulate. Note German equivalent: Fichen/Fichts.

From Wikipedia
The word fuck has cognates in other Germanic languages, such as German ficken (to copulate), Middle Dutch fokken (to thrust, copulate, or to breed), dialectical Norwegian fukka (to copulate), and dialectical Swedish focka (to strike, copulate) and fock (penis).
